4:59 alarm clock - a small but sharp quake localized to the Kanto Plain

This morning at 4:59, my dreams of nuclear reactors and earthquakes were interrupted by … an earthquake. It was a tiny one – only Mag. 4.1 – yet it was notable for its sudden and sharp release rather than for any sense of rolling shake. It was right here. So, with a burst of adrenaline, I was up for the day.

It’s hard to not immediately go look for updated information about the situation here in Japan. News from Sendai is important. So, too, are updates about the reactors in Fukushima. Add to that shifting weather patterns bringing winds from the north wrapping around into Tokyo that, if there are any radioactive contaminants, well, we’ll get ’em. Did I mention rain? That’s possibly in the forecast. The combination of potential radioactive material and rain is not one that comforts the mind.

I read on a BBC News update that the fuel rods in Fukushima Dai-ichi Reactor #2 were fully exposed. Again. It’s hard to imagine that any reactor that has experienced full exposure of the rods on multiple occasions would not have experienced a partial meltdown. And, while unlikely, a complete meltdown is still possible.

Checking the train schedule, I see my local train line is running today. That means I’d better get myself ready for a day of IT. Rolling blackouts are a fact of life here now, and that means safe server shutdowns and restarts. It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out over the next few weeks.

If anybody would like to offer me a full-time gig in Canada replete with a house suitable for 5, feel free to e-mail me. I even do windows. 😉

  1. You even do windows? NT, Vista or the Cloud….. ???? LOL I, for one, would feel much better if you were in Canada.

    • Yeah, baby, I do Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, HP/UX, Irix, SunOS … 😉

Watching how quickly things are turning to irradiated crap here, I’d be a LOT happier to be watching it all from a Canadian snowbank. *sigh*

      • Putting my vibes out at this very moment for a gig for you and the family. Yes Canada and entertaining the USA as well. I am not kidding as you are not.
        i appreciate you
